Come Lay It Down

I’m in a season of letting go, of laying down some things which are no longer mine to carry.  And just when I think I have finally won the battle, I realize I’m carrying it again.  I can see myself walking back towards God.  My face is down. I know better. I remind myself of my King Charles when she fishes something out of the trash. Just when I start to walk by, she looks up at me with those eyes. I don’t even have to say a word before she gently opens her mouth and let’s the thing fall …

If My Heart Had a Voice

I was listening to an Elizabeth Gilbert podcast the other morning; they are lifelines for me and have been used in place of anti-depressants in many moments.  Liz interviews “amateur” artists to help them get unstuck from their fears and whatever obstacles are holding them back.  As she interviewed this poet, she was asking her about rejection and who decides if she’s a real poet or not.  The woman had an emotional and pregnant pause before beginning, “If my heart had a voice…” I could not go on. I had to stop and write this down.  What an idea.  If my …

His first great challenge to us: “You’ve got to get close to the problems you want to change.”  He talked about the “power in proximity” and how we cannot change the false narrative around so many of the issues plaguing our …

Less than a week from today, on September 22nd, your social feeds are going to be green with North Texas Giving Day promotions.  This online event powered by Communities Foundation of Texas gives me that Helen-Keller-quote-feeling: “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.”   Our city faces real challenges.  People need jobs to earn living wages, particularly single women raising children.  This Dallas Morning news article said there are 50,000 children living in “extreme poverty.”  50,000 kids. North Texas Giving Day Sponsor, Dallas Women’s Foundation quotes here that 740 girls are trafficked in Texas in one …

Small thoughts on God’s Big Love

We’ve heard it a lot of different ways. Donald Miller said it in Blue Like Jazz.  Jen Hatmaker says it in this podcast. When people can tell you don’t like them, they don’t care what you think. In fact, they are more likely to disregard what you think, even if you are right. Being right is not the point. Loving one another is the point. Go out as sheep among wolves, not the other way around. Bear with one another in love. Forgive one another. Make allowances for one another’s faults. Longsuffering. Demonstrating all expressions of humility, gentleness, and patience. I’ve …
